Mother Brain revealed as new Smash Bros. Assist Trophy

Grey matters

Usually, Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai will wait for a special event to make specific announcements - but given Super Metroid's 20th birthday isn't until next month, it looks as though he just couldn't wait.

In his Miiverse pic of the day caption, he wrote: "Housed within the Control Capsule! Protected by Rinkas! Eyeball armed with a Laser Brain Attack!! The massive Assist Trophy Mother Brain joins the collection!!"

If we were desperately hopeful people, we'd hope this is the start of a month of Metroid-related Smash Bros. announcements - and we are. We hope this is the start of a month of Metroid-related Smash Bros. announcements.

Definitely one of the more awesome Assist Trophies so far, and it's nice to see how this new one actually works.

Yeah, I was actually surprised to see this. looks like Sakurai is actually his 'ideas I'd like to use for characters but they really aren't being fleshed out' for Assist Trophies rather than some bit part players in Brawl. That said, seeing an Assist trophy attack airbourne fighters is something different. You go, Sakurai!

She's huge too. my only issue with it is...

...I lost my copy of Zero mission years ago and now I REALLY want to fight Mother Brain right now. I'm too thick to play NES Metroid.

My guess is she aims for a specific character and beams them them a new whole.
That or makes their eyesight clearer..

Look at the wrinkles on that one. Great stuff.

Now let's have playable Ridley, please!

Please be next month due to the 20th anniversary for Super Metroid.. Either before or after Yoshi is revealed just to shut those people up about Yoshi being dropped.

Anyway we had a good week of reveals. Monday and Tuesday were about Lucario's aura abilities (Aura's effect being amped up and Extreme Speed being affected by Aura) followed by Palkia as a Poke Ball Pokemon with Spacial Rend (Please keep the cry from the film and Brawl which was similar to Obi-Wan's mount in Star Wars 3) then the Rosalina pic which started people off with their dirty minds and now Mother Brain as an assist trophy. I imagine huge levels of damage from this as it's like the attack she uses in Super Metroid at the end which takes away tons of health. Probably have to be a rare appearance like the Legendarys are for the Poke Balls.

OMIGOSH METROID IS A GAME I TOTALLY FORGOT LELELELELE
Nah just kidding. Wow this is a really cool reference to the metroid series and is bound to be a cool assist trophy. Kudos to Sakurai!

Yoshi's New Island is being released on the 14th March (a Friday), so it would be okay to reveal Yoshi then. Also, a Nintendo Direct on the 19th March (Wednesday), aka Super Metroid's 20th Anniversary, it would be a perfect date to reveal Ridley.

Ridley would be better, plus ZSS wouldn't bring as much hype. Returning veterans are often shown on the website and miiverse updates, except Luigi and Sonic, but for Luigi it's because it's the Year of Luigi, and with Sonic he's a 3rd party character, so they're an exception. Newcomers are often shown via a Nintendo Direct.

I would prefer ZSS over Yoshi. although I get the feeling that this games Yoshi might the Yarn version so if he was announced we may be waiting a long time for an announcement. That and I find ZSS more enjoyable to play as..
