Smash Bros. Melee joins EVO 2014 roster

Nintendo's punch 'em up joins the fight(ing game tournament) for a second time

GameCube classic Super Smash Bros. Melee was the surprise hit at EVO, the world's largest fighting game tournament, last year. With 696 competitors and around 134,000 viewers online, it was the biggest Smash Bros. competition of all time - so it's no surprise that Shoryuken has today announced that the game will return for the 2014 edition.

Taking place from 11-13 July at the Las Vegas Hotel & Casino, it should be just the fix for our current Smash Bros. fever, yearning as we are for the newest installment in the series. Will you be watching?

Excellent news! i know some people aren't fans of the competitive scene of Smash but, as far as I'm concerned, people can play it anyway they like. I've played Project M and actually enjoyed and it familiarised again me with the Melee play style and convinced me the competitive scene is actually a friendly place. I can't say if its the same with other fighting communities but I can vouch the Smash community is a very amicable one (In fact, some of them actually prefer Brawl over Melee contrary to popular belief). That said, anything that gets the game noticed and taken seriously among it's fighting game peers is a good thing. With the new game currently in development, I hope it will challenge Melee with it's mechanics (and by the looks of it, Sakurai is really taking note and trying to please compet players with new mechanics (the screenshots that have been released so far in terms of mechanics and characters have really caused a lot of positive feedback and conversation)

Anyway, I'm happy with this news. Although I'm not a tourney player but someone who likes the compet scene and is partial to playing that way sometimes, it's a good thing.

I'm glad it wasn't as begrudgingly as last year. Promoting competitive Smash is a case of win-win.

This only applies to new and casual Smash gamers.

Pro Smash gamers certainly aren't yearning for the newest installment in the series. If anything, they are reminiscing about the good ol' times.
