The first Earthworm Jim was an entertaining platformer that was as funny as it was visually impressive. In terms of actual gameplay however, there was a certain something missing. This Mega Drive sequel manages to improve on every aspect of the original, from the fun factor to the animation to - most importantly - the bizarre and hilarious sense of humour.

The story is classic Shakespearian stuff. The beautiful Princess What's-Her-Name has been kidnapped and is due to marry the evil Psycrow, so Jim teams up with his new sidekick Snott (which is just a big green blob of snot) as they set out to rescue her.

Every level is memorable and packed to the brim with all sorts of weird and wonderful moments. There's the area where Jim has to get to the top of a series of staircases by dodging falling grannies while using a stairlift. Then there's the section where huge flowers spit out time-bomb cows that Jim has to grab and dunk in water to douse the fuse before they explode. Strangest of all though is the level simply titled "Jim's Now A Blind Cave Salamander" in which Jim, dressed as a slimy fetus-like creature, has to swim through some intestines before having to answer nonsensical questions in a gameshow. Our personal favourite is "What colour is Jim's red gun? A) Blue, B) Green, C) Yellow". The answer's green for some reason, by the way.

Every character in Earthworm Jim 2 is a classic, from the main man himself to Psycrow (an evil crow in a spacesuit), Evil The Cat (a sneaky feline who has it in for Jim) and Bob The Goldfish (an evil goldfish who's hilariously defeated in the easiest boss fight of all time).

It's not quite perfect. There's a section where Jim flies around in his pocket rocket that, while adding diversity to the game, is nowhere near as entertaining as the actual platforming stages. The same goes for the three compulsory bonus levels, where you have to bounce puppies on a marshmallow to make sure they don't splat on the ground. Overall however, Earthworm Jim is a funny and compelling platformer that's well worth a download.
