Miyamoto: A Jolly Good Fellow

Why his BAFTA Fellowship is long overdue
Tonight is the Games BAFTAs - a yearly shindig that involves reaching into the darkest corners of my cupboard, dusting off an ill-fitting suit and heading over to watch a load of gongs being presented to games industry types.

While the winners of most of the awards are yet to be revealed, we already know the recipient of one of them. Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto is to pick up the BAFTA Academy Fellowship, the highest possible honour.

I can't think of any game creator more deserving - essentially, my childhood (and millions of others) was built around his games. So please excuse the gushing praise that follows...

His importance to the games industry simply cannot be overestimated. From Donkey Kong right up to the forthcoming Super Mario Galaxy 2, it's difficult to think of one single person that has masterminded so many brilliant, boundary-smashing games.

Of course, the Mario games will always be his most famous work - but it's worth remembering that he's had a hand in plenty of other quality Nintendo games. Zelda, Star Fox, Pikmin and the revolutionary Wii Sports have all been dusted with his skills.

So, this weekend's question: What's your favourite Miyamoto creation? A combination of nostalgia and long-standing brilliance means that for me it'll always be Super Mario Bros 3; but what's yours?
