Wave Race 64

One of the best raceing games ever
Ask any developer what's the most difficult thing to create in a game and they'll most likely tell you it's water. Ever since the advent of 3D gaming, developers have strived to achieve realistic water effects. So when only a ccouple of years onto the polygon phenomonon Nintendo announced Wave Race 64, everyone was wondering how it would handle the water physics.

The short answer? Incredibly well. Racing a jetski through the harsh seas in Wave Race 64 feels so realistic that even 11 years after its release, there's not much in gaming that betters it.

Basically, each stage takes the form of an elaborate slalom race, in which you have to ride in between coloured buoys on the course. Miss five in a race and you're disqualified. This may sound a bit tricky, but it's actually pretty easy to stay on track.

Interestingly, the game's graphics have been changed slightly since the original release. The N64 original had advertising banners promoting Kawasaki, however, in the 11 years since the game was released Nintendo has lost the Kawasaki licence. So rather than getting his witha lawsuit, the ads have been replaced with Wii and DS ones.

It's strange playing a game more than a decade old with DS adverts in it, but it doesn't detract from our enjoyment of what is still one of the best racing games on any Nintendo console. Highly recommended.
