There are already looads of side-scrolling platform games on the Virtual Console so the arrival of another NES one may not necessarily fill you with joy. Adventure Island however is the first game in a successful series that went on to spawn six sequels.
You play as Master Higgins, a chubby-faced lad who wears a grass skirt and a red baseball cap. His girlfriend Tina has been kidnapped and it's up to you to travel through the game's 32 levels and find her.
In terms of enjoyment this adventure isn't that bad: it's pretty slow-moving but it's running around chucking axes at enemies is good fun. The skateboard shich helps you get through the levels quicker adds to the enjoyment.
That said, if you like the idea of Adventure Island we'd recommend you go for New Adventure Island instead. The TurboGrafx title has been available on Virtual Console for some time now and has far superior graphics and sound for only 100 extra points.
