Sega has officially announced Sonic Unleashed for Wii and here are a couple of new screens and the trailer.
Of course leaked gameplay footage has given many a taste of what's to come as Sonic Unleashed sees the hedgehog returning to what he does best - pacey 2D platforming.
It's not a complete step back in time though as the background visuals are pretty special and we are told that the action will often switch between 2D and 3D seamlessly.
This time Dr Eggman has broken the world into pieces and Sonic has to put it back together again by retrieving the power of chaos emeralds. In addition to high speed running, the hedgehog will have to enage in some combat as he speeds around the seven continents in a race against the time to save the world.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about this new game is how the game changes in the night levels. Sega is promising a different type of adventure when the sun sets.
To find out more, make sure you pick up Issue 29 of Official Nintendo Magazine on Friday 11 April to read the world's first Sonic Unleashed preview.
No irritating voice acting. I know sega will put voice acting in, but i can dream right?
No novelty controls. The secret rings wasnt to bad, but it could have been better.
Less 3D, more 2D
And thats about it. If it turns out good, well done sega. If it turns out rubbish like every sonic game after the mega drive, sega really should pull their socks up or hand sonic over to nintendo.
I know, im no sonic fan. But i love the mega drive games, and it annoys me how dire some of the recent ones have been. 3D sonic had never worked, and the recent 2D ones have been good but not great. So im afraid ive already dissmisssed this. Unless something incredible happens...
One, it's an opinion. And two, that's because Secret Rings was Great. Flawed yes, but it is one of the best Sonic games they've released for a long while on a console platform. The motion controls, while slightly iffy, were quite inspired and from the looks of things here I wouldn't be overly surprised if they did use the Wii-mote again in some fashion of tilting for the Day-levels.
Anyway, This is looking awesome. I can't wait to read the hands on impressions next week. =)
I read on the official press release that the game is using a new 'Hedgehog Engine'. This makes me think that they are really stepping it up a notch for this game. But it does also make me think. it states that the engine has been in production for approx 3 years so could this explain why sonic 06 was so rushed and pretty bad so that they could focus on the engine and getting this game spot on?
